MOUNT ZION — Donald C. Spain, 71, of Mt. Zion, IL, passed away at 10:39 a.m., Thursday, July 4, 2019, in his residence.
A service to celebrate Don's life will begin with the family receiving friends for visitation Monday evening July 8, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m., at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children's Hospital. Don was born March 7, 1948, in Springfield, IL, the son of Donald E. and Esther Louise (Blakeman) Spain. Don married Alice F. Goble on August 17, 1974. He retired as a Financial Advisor with Equitable/AXA. Don had played professional baseball in the Major and Minor Leagues. He recently was nominated and will be inducted to the Decatur Public Schools #61 Athletic Hall of Fame. He had formerly coached Boys baseball in the Mt. Zion area and assisted in founding the Mt. Zion American Legion Boy's Baseball team.
Surviving are his wife: Alice of Mt. Zion, sons: Tony and Jennifer (Daly) Spain of Bloomington, Matthew Spain of Decatur, Josh Spain of Bloomington, and R.J. Spain of Mt. Zion; granddaughters: Sydney Spain and Samantha Spain both of Bloomington; also surviving are five step-grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and his two sisters.
