LATHAM -- George Harold Hubbard (86), Winnetka, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2018 with loving family members at his side. George was born on July 6, 1932 in Springfield, Illinois, son of the late Harold and Leonore Hubbard. George spent the early years of his life on the family farm outside of Latham, Illinois. The Hubbard family later relocated to Mt. Pulaski where George developed his love of sports, hunting and fishing. George graduated from the University of Notre Dame, where he played on the football team and was successful in boxing, ultimately winning the light heavyweight championship of the Bengal Bouts; he was also a member of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC). Upon graduation, George was commissioned an Ensign in the in the U.S. Naval Reserve and awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He later served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade Supply Officer aboard the Naval Supply Depot at San Diego, California; where he married Mary Ann Ladic and then started his family.
Following his time in the Navy, George and family moved to Decatur, Illinois where he transitioned from accountant to stockbroker, working at Tabor and Company and then A. G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. for 50-years. With the family growing to nine children, there was a move to the country for more living space and to afford the children an opportunity to experience the same things George loved: outdoor passions – hunting, fishing, farming and horses. Later in life, George’s passions for horses and hunting gave way to travel with Evelyn, his beloved wife of 29 years. George’s pride and love for his Notre Dame Fighting Irish alma mater never waned. He always loved to laugh and live life fully, whether on the farm, traveling the world or telling stories to his grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Leonore, sister Joan, son Martin, and stepdaughter Betsy Sweeney (Brian, surviving). He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn and her daughters Cindy Kraemer (Tom), Melissa O’Brien (Bradd) and Jennifer Michels; brother Jim; and the mother of his children Mary Ann Koucky, children George (Nancy), Cecilia Kehoe (Kevin), Tom (Suzanne), Anne Herzog (Jim), Sanford (Marcy), Peggy McElravey (John), Julie Shute (Fred) and Kate Marcinek (Steve), 25 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was an active parishioner at Saints Faith, Hope and Charity Parish in Winnetka, Illinois.
