DECATUR -- Ronald L. “Ron” Gillen, 83, of Decatur, IL, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2019 in Life’s Journey Senior Living, Taylorville, IL.
Ron was born August 5, 1935 in Decatur, the son of Albert Lee and Martha Ellen (Gaston) Gillen. He graduated from Lakeview High School where he was proud to play varsity basketball. Ron was a US Army veteran of the Korean war and worked for Illinois Power for 51 years retiring in 2006. He coached baseball and softball and was a member of IBEW and American Legion Post 105. He married Deborah Griffin on July 18, 1987 in Decatur.
He is survived by his wife, Deb; children: Ronald Gillen, Daniel and wife Lisa Gillen, Laura Schultz and fiancé Cory Madsen; stepchildren: Timothy and wife Aimee Fyke, Kelley and husband Shawn Overrocker, Cara and husband Tom Peter and Joseph and wife Corey Fyke; grandchildren: Jennifer, Amy, Katie, Tyler, Jayne, Mitch, Tony, Chris, Danielle, Sydney, Ryan, Addison, Dalton, Evan, Griffin, Knox, Rylie, Brody, Tommy, Noah, Brynn, Avery and Tessa Jo; eleven great grandchildren; siblings: James and wife Sue Gillen and Joyce Morenz; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister in law, Richard and Betty Gillen and brother in law, Ed Morenz.
Visitation will be Friday, May 10, 2019, from 12 pm until the service time of 2 pm at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home, concluding with military rites by the Macon County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s research or American Legion Post 105.
