THUMBS UP! To Warrensburg. The city has decided to allow residents to vote on a recreational cannabis dispensary. If and as other governing bodies in Central Illinois decide to put the issue on ballots, voters need to be aware of whether the referendums are binding or advisory. Advisory referendums are nice to have, but governing groups can ignore them. If Decatur citizens gather enough signatures to put the issue on the ballot, the vote still is not binding. We've been down that road before, most notably on leaf burning.
THUMBS DOWN! To extra company on the roads. The time of year when deer are highly active has arrived. The animals can come out of the dark and appear suddenly in front of drivers. While the deer generally lose the showdown, vehicles and their passengers are susceptible to damage as well. Be extra alert during dusk and dawn hours. Also, keep in mind if you're crossing state lines, Iowa and Wisconsin are two of the country's top 10 states for deer-vehicle collisions.
THUMBS UP! To those keeping the polish on the Decatur Masonic Temple. This is one of our community's historic treasures that deserves special care and attention.
