THUMBS UP! To the WSOY Community Food Drive. We print this hours before the event begins. We know the event will succeed, because we know the people who have made this successful all along continue to be involved and continue to challenge themselves and us. Annually with this event, Decatur gets to put its foot forward and show its best to the world. Let's do this thing.

THUMBS UP! To the Decatur Police. Their Coffee with a Cop events may play into stereotypes, especially when donuts join the coffee. But what happens at those events is a microcosm of our society. Maybe a student helps a policeman see from a different perspective, and a policeman helps a student the same way. All because people were willing to take the time to listen to one another.

THUMBS UP! To a tremendous show of support. Tyson Mendoza 5, of Gays, was a passenger on a school bus involved in a crash with an SUV, an accident that also claimed Lori Samples, a former, a former teacher from Decatur. The Sullivan school district, via Facebook post, encouraged students to wear blue to school on Monday, since that was the student's favorite color. The post went viral, shared by hundreds of people, and numerous Central Illinois schools, businesses and organizations participated. Hopefully, the effort gave those grieving a little bit of relief.

THUMBS UP! To Boo at the Zoo. We're still a few days from its Oct. 17 opening, but the Scovill Zoo event is always a community favorite. The staff is currently working on the zoo's transformation. The event is fun, and useful – proceeds help keep the animals fed through the winter season.
