THUMBS UP! To Betsy Dirksen Londrigan, who announced her campaign for the 13th Congressional seat, currently held by Republican Rodney Davis. Londrigan lost to Davis in last year's campaign by 2,058 votes. If she's thinking an early announcement will help her in fundraising, it's a good decision to enter now. However …

THUMBS DOWN! To voter fatigue. A contentious 2016 election, followed by an equally contentious vote in 2018. Locally, we barely had time to exhale after the last national trip to the polls before we had to do it again, voting for mayor, city council and school board. Can politicians maybe leave us alone for a little bit?

THUMBS UP! To Macon County law enforcement officers participating in the statewide Scott's Law awareness campaign. The 2002 law requires motorists to slow down and move over when attempting to pass an emergency vehicle parked on the right side of the road. This year has already seen 16 officers struck by vehicles in such cases. Four of those officers died. Macon County's zero-tolerance policy is the right answer.

THUMBS UP! To Tiger Woods. His rise and fall were remarkable, but even more remarkable was his win in last weekend's Masters golf tournament. Woods last won the Masters 11 years ago. Four years ago, he was physically incapable of playing in any of the major tournaments, and two years ago, he was undergoing professional help to manage medication for back pain and a sleep disorder. Last June, he missed the cut in U.S. Open, another major. His comeback is one of the greatest in sports history.

THUMBS DOWN! To tired moral righteousness. Within hours of the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral, donations of close to a billion dollars had been pledged for the repair effort. Within minutes of those reports reaching social media, feeds were filled by critics who wanted those donations to go to other causes. No one has to answer for their decisions to donate their personal money to any cause. You're welcome to disagree, but wouldn't your time be better spent working on ways to convince people to support your favorite cause?

THUMBS UP! To those willing to cut off the irritation at the source. As footage from “Avengers: Endgame” was leaked online, some fans vowed they'd steer clear of social media until the blockbuster opens on Thursday, April 25. Given the manner in which we communicate and remain informed, to cut yourself off from social media for a week in an impressive goal. They be the better for it.
