THUMBS UP! To Chris Barnett. The electronics technician for Decatur Public Schools had his 50th work anniversary noted by the school board. Barnett, 69, was surprised by the presentation, which may have been one of the few times in his life that he was caught unawares. Barnett is indeed as superb a person as described, but you have to know where to look for him.

THUMBS DOWN! To phone scammers. The Macon County Sheriff's Office issued a pair of warnings this week about scammers. Calls have been made in our area by people claiming to represent the sheriff's office about people missing jury duty or that there is a warrant for the recipient's arrest. The Macon County Sheriff's office does not call individuals over arrest warrants or jury duty.

THUMBS UP! To the Cruise to Remember 9/11. The annual event, which just marked its 11th anniversary, honors veterans and first responders, also acts as a fundraiser for the Help 4 Heroes Fund, which helps provide Macon County veterans with necessities. The event's success is a point of pride for our city, and well as a helpful effort toward those needing help.

THUMBS UP! To the 18th annual Fido Scurry 5k and its after-party of the Fairview Pool Dog Swim. The swim has given dozens of dogs (and their owners) with a pool day. It comes at the end of the season, and it lasts for just a couple of hours. But you can bet those couple of hours will be remembered fondly.
