PELLA, Iowa — Central College women's basketball team spoiled first-year Millikin head coach Olivia Lett's debut Saturday as the Dutch topped the Big Blue 70-64 in the season opener.
The Big Blue trailed 16-15 at the end of the first quarter and Central outscored the Big Blue by seven in the second quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game. The teams each scored 18 points in the third quarter and Millikin outscored Central 18-16 in the fourth quarter.
Millikin shot 36.5 percent including going 5-for-16 (68 percent) from 3-point range. The Big Blue were 13-for-16 from the free throw line.
Central shot 38 percent and went 15-for-18 from the line. The Dutch controlled the glass, winning the rebounding battle 55 to 31. Millikin forced Central into 28 turnovers while committing 20.
Freshman Aubrey Staton led Millikin (0-1) with 26 points including going 4-for-5 from 3-point range. Staton also had nine rebounds, three blocks and two assists.
Yanni Saddler added 14 points. Newcomer Aubrey Magro had eight points and three assists. Sophomore Jordan Hildebrand had six points and eight rebounds.
Central (2-0) was led by Maci Gambell with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Millikin will play at Simpson College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Millikin men 96, Principia 76
ELSAH — The Millikin men's basketball team picked up a road victory, defeating Principia.
Millikin led 46-44 at halftime. In the second half, the game was tied 60-60 with 14:26 left in the game when the Big Blue went on a 12-0 run to lead 72-60 with 9:23 remaining. Millikin was up 79-65 with seven minutes left the game and the Big Blue used an 11-4 run over the next three minutes to seal the victory.
Millikin shot 16-for-28 (57 percent) in both the first and second half. The Big Blue hit on 8-for-11 (73 percent) from 3-point range in the first half and made 3-for-7 (43 percent) in the second half.
Principia hit on 50 percent from the field and made 8-for-18 (44 percent) from 3-point range. Millikin dominated in the rebounding battle 37 to 14.
Freshman Jake Hampton led the Big Blue with 21 points. Hampton was 7-for-9 from the field including 4-for-6 from 3-point range.
Senior Elijah Henry scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Senior DaVante Harrell and freshman Calvin Fisher each scored 15 points. Fisher was 5-for-7 from the field going 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Michal Paulson led Principia with 31 points followed by Trevaughn Goodman with 24.
Millikin (2-0) plays at Coe College on Monday.
