DECATUR -- The Millikin men's basketball team lost a home CCIW game to Elmhurst College 74-62 at the Griswold Center Wednesday.
The game was a tight one for the first three quarters with Elmhurst leading 33-31 at halftime. The game was tied at 42-42 with 13:24 remaining before Elmhurst went on a 16-5 run to pull ahead 58-47 with 8:53 left in the game. Millikin could never get closer than eight points down the stretch and the Bluejays converted late free throw opportunities to secure the victory.
Millikin shot 44 percent from the field including going 4-for-10 from 3-point range. The Big Blue struggled from the free throw line hitting only 5-for-12 (42 percent) including going 2-for-8 in the second half. Turnovers were a major problem for Millikin committing 23 and allowing Elmhurst to score 30 points off turnovers. The Bluejays committed 15 turnovers. Millikin won the rebounding battle 36 to 31.
Elmhurst shot 56 percent from the field and went 4-for-11 from 3-point range. The Bluejays were 15-for-19 (79 percent) from the free throw line including hitting 14-for-18 in the second half.
Millikin's top scorer and rebounder was Elijah Henry with 17 points and 10 rebounds. DaVante Harrell added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. Korbin Farmer had 10 points and nine rebounds. Calvin Fisher scored nine points and pulled down five boards.
Jake Rhode led Elmhurst (3-3, 1-0 CCIW) with 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jeremy Ireland added 13 and Colin Bornstad had 11.
Millikin (4-3,0-2 CCIW) will travel to Carroll College on Saturday, Dec. 8.
Big Blue women suffer road defeat
CHICAGO -- The Millikin women's basketball team lost at North Park University 79-66 Wednesday.
Millikin led 14-13 after the first quarter and built a 36-33 advantage at halftime.
The Vikings rallied in the third quarter and took a 56-54 lead and the end of three. North Park sealed the victory with a strong fourth quarter outscoring Millikin 23 to 12.
North Park shot 46.5 percent from the field while the Big Blue hit on 46 percent of their shots. The Vikings took 17 more shots than the Millikin due to 26 Big Blue turnovers and a 38 to 35 rebounding advantage. North Park committed 16 turnovers.
Yanni Saddler led Millikin (2-6, 1-1 CCIW) with 18 points. Briana Anthony and Aubrey Staton each scored 14. Faith Smith had a team high seven rebounds.
Jayla Johnson led the Vikings (4-4, 1-1 CCIW) with 31 points going 13-17 from the field and 5-5 from the free throw line.
