DECATUR — The Illinois Thundercats, an 8-man football team based in Decatur, will play for the Mid-America 8-Man Football League championship at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pawnee High School.
The Thundercats (10-1) beat the Effingham Storm 48-26 in the semifinals last weekend and advanced to the championship to face the Peoria Punishers.
Longtime Decatur-area youth and semi-pro football coach Tracy Stepney has been coaching the Thundercats since it began in 2013. The team is made up of 43 players, some from the area and some from the St. Louis area and other regions.

The Thundercats feature running back Dee Woods, the former Cerro Gordo-Bement star who graduated in 2014, along with Stepney’s son Tori at receiver.
Other players include former MacArthur players QuinTon Fonville-Simmons (quarterbak), Ken Goodman (linebacker), and former Eisenhower player Doron Lewis (offensive line).
“I’ve coached a majority of these guys since JFL and I watched them play in high school,” Stepney said. “Some went to college to play and some didn’t, but I’ve been coaching semi-pro teams for a long time and love doing it.”
