Run up to the playoffs
Contenders. Dark Horses. We break down the 1A - 5A football brackets.
Leading contenders
Lena-Winslow (9-0) – The Northwest Upstate Illini Northwest has produced three state champions the last two seasons, including Lena in 2013. Lena survived early injuries to its starting quarterback and running back, using a committee of backs led by Brendan Eilders to beat Galena and Dakota in close games and emerge as the 1A favorite.
Polo (9-0) – While the Northwest Upstate Illini Upstate hasn't had as much success in recent years as the Northwest division, it's no slouch, though the Marcos made it look that way. Led by the Grobes brothers – Brooks and Brody – Polo shut out five of its opponents and won by less than 40 just once.
Toulon Stark County (9-0) – A season after falling to eventual state champion Forreston in the playoffs, the Rebels could be ready to break through for the first time since 2008 with running back Chase Johnson running behind a physical, experienced offensive line.
Tuscola (9-0) – When teams were able to move the ball against Tuscola, the Warriors' offense erased any hope with quarterback Nick Bates passing and running behind an impressive offensive line with several weapons at his disposal. Tuscola is battle-tested, having beaten six playoff teams.
Don't rule out
Arcola (9-0) – How stacked is Class 1A? Arcola allowed fewer points (2.0 per game) and beat teams by a larger margin margin (55.7) than any other team in the state regardless of class. But a weak schedule left the Purple Riders untested compared with the rest of the deep field of 1A contenders.
Dakota (7-2) – The Indians looked like a top contender, with a one-score loss to Lena their only blemish, until a 28-13 loss to Galena in Week 9. But as teams in the NUIC Northwest have shown in the past, the regular season doesn't always predict what happens in the playoffs.
Galena (7-2) -- The Pirates were the top-ranked team in 1A coming into the season, but two losses in the first four games -- by a combined 11 points to Lena and Forreston -- made them an afterthought until knocking off Dakota in Week 9. Like the rest of the NUIC Northwest, the Pirates use a power run game, theirs led by Bruce Scharpf.
Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (9-0) -- While the Falcons haven't won a playoff game since 2011 and made it past the second round just once in coach Mike Allen's previous 15 seasons, this is their first undefeated team since the consolidation in 1993. A defense that allowed 5.3 points makes them a tough out.
Other area teams
LSA (5-4) -- The Lions are making their first playoff appearance in their fourth year as a varsity program. For a team with a 5-4 record, they got a favorable first-round matchup with an 8-1 Pawnee team that beat Cerro Gordo-Bement by two points two weeks before LSA lost to the Broncos by a point.
St. Teresa (6-3) -- The Bulldogs were ranked third in Class 1A when the season started, but early losses to Tolono Unity and Maroa-Forsyth dropped them out of the rankings. St. T struggled to beat non-playoff teams in Central A&M and Warrensburg-Latham, but remain a dangerous team with a big line and an electric running back in Jacardia Wright.
Most playoff appearances
Stockton and Galena have each made the playoffs 29 times.
Fewest playoff appearances
LSA, Chicago Douglass and Elgin Westminster Christian are all making their first appearances.
Did you know?
The two teams favored to make the state title game -- Tuscola and Lena-Winslow -- have won four of the past nine 1A titles (two each).
Defending champ
Forreston 20, Carrollton 15
Leading contenders
Downs Tri-Valley (9-0) – The Vikings haven't had the toughest schedule but have smashed everyone in its way. Seven times they have held opponents to one score or less. And Tri-Valley knows about postseason runs, finishing second two years ago.
Maroa-Forsyth (7-2) – While the quarterback position only recently seems to have become solidified, Maroa has trotted out a defense that is one of its best. Those two losses? They came to state-ranked 3A teams St. Joseph-Ogden and Monticello.
Don't rule out
Pana (9-0) – A unit without big-name players, the Panthers were only tested once this season -- a 21-13 win against Vandalia. A defense that is allowing just 6.7 points gets much of the credit, but Pana has twice scored 50 points in its first 9-0 regular season since 1998.Â
Annawan-Wethersfield (8-1) -- The Titans are the most battle-tested of this years field, with seven of its nine opponents making the playoffs. Defense was the biggest reason, giving up just 11.9 points per game.
Eldorado (9-0) -- It didn't have one of the tougher schedules, but they did what they needed against those teams. Through the first six weeks, the Eagles outscored their opponents 41.8-4.2. They closed with wins over three playoff teams.
Area teams
Sangamon Valley (8-1) – The Storm are making a second straight playoff trip since moving to the Little Okaw Valley Conference. This year's team can pick up yardage in huge chunks via the run. Six times they scored at least 40 points.
Shelbyville (7-2) – Shelbyville's young team may be a year ahead of schedule as the Rams posted some impressive victories, including a win over 8-1 Pawnee. Shelbyville has a shot at winning a couple games to set up a possible showdown with Pana.
Cerro Gordo-Bement (5-4) – If the Broncos can clear some room for Dalton Grohler, they can put points on the board. Three times this season, Cerro Gordo scored at least 47 points.
Most playoff appearances
Auburn is making its 27th appearance and 19th straight.
Least playoff appearances
Savanna West Carroll is making a fourth trip to the playoffs and first since 2007.
Did you know?
The last 2A state champ school to be represented in this year's field is Maroa (2012).
Defending champ
Eastland Pearl City 41, Maroa-Forsyth 12
Leading contenders
Wilmington (9-0) -- The defending champs had at least a little bit of a passing presence last season, but don't do it this year -- only 16 attempts. But the Wildcats haven't needed to, running behind a big, experienced offensive line. RB Nick Hawkins is the leader of the pack (1,370 yards, 20 TDs).Â
St. Joseph-Ogden (9-0) -- The Spartans' defense has been their calling card, while the offense steadily scores. In tough Okaw Valley play, the Spartans allowed 9.9 points per game -- never more than 20 in a game.
Bloomington Central Catholic (8-1) -- The Saints have been in 4A for 9 of the last 10 years and were really successful in it, which makes them a dangerous matchup this year. They're balanced on offense with QB Jake Baughman and RB Brett Segobiano (1,175 yards).
Don't rule out
Princeton (9-0) -- The undefeated Tigers are a Cinderella story. They hadn't had a winning record since 2003, and now they're undefeated for the first time ever. They're also the largest school in the 3A field.
Virden North Mac (9-0) -- Of the teams that played at least six playoff qualifiers in the regular season, North Mac's defense has the best numbers. The Panthers are allowing 15.6 points per game. Offensively, they'll win on the ground with three players rushing for more than 700 yards.
Newton (9-0) -- The Eagles made a statement with a 31-25 win Week 7 against Marshall (8-1). RB Mitch Bierman rushed for 354 yards in the game. He's the area's leading rusher (1,833 yards, 30 TDs). Nobody's been able to slow the offense, which also features QB Brock Mammoser (15 TDs, 1 INT).
Area teams
Monticello (8-1)Â --Â The Sages defense is vastly improved from last year's version and needed to be. The highly-touted offense, led by QB Brandon Wildman, has struggled with inconsistency, while the defense has been the backbone allowing 15 points per game.
Sullivan-Okaw Valley (5-4) -- The Redskins need to forget about last week's loss, arguably their toughest of the season. The big play ability of QB Ty Molzen and WR Alec Ballinger may help. Molzen scored a 97-yard TD run last week and Ballinger a 90-yard kick return.
Most playoff appearances
Kankakee Bishop McNamara (8-1) is back for the 34th time and with its best regular season record since 1998, when it finished second.
Least playoff appearances
Chicago Clark (6-3) is in the playoffs for the second time and first since 2008, when the Eagles were a 5A school.
Did you know?
When Princeton won its season opener last season, it broke a 20-game losing streak dating back to 2011.
Defending champ
Wilmington 20, Williamsville 17
Leading contenders
Rochester (8-1) -- Well, of course they are. The five-time state champs have thrived on offense under second-year quarterback Dan Ziegler. There aren't too many other returning starters from that state championship team, but with Derek Leonard coaching, that's not necessary. Collin Stallworth leads a deep receiving corps.
Chicago Phillips (9-0) -- Phillips was the state runner-up to Rochester last year, and much of their skill position players are gone. But both lines are strong with D-I talent in Amani Jones (Iowa) and Amir Watts, and three linemen are back on offense. Quayvon Sakanes (UConn) is a speedy threat at receiver. Last year was the first year Phillips made it out of the first round, but they look like a real contender again.
Don't rule out
Geneseo (8-1) -- Geneseo bounces back down to 4A after taking second place two years ago. The Leafs once again bring a strong defense (63 allowed points), and Jordan Jackson leads the rushing attack.
Rockford Lutheran (9-0) -- Powerful running back James Robinson (undecided) is back for his senior year and Lutheran will run much of its offense through him. Lutheran lost by one point to eventual runner-up Phillips last year.
Belleville Althoff (9-0) -- Quarterback Jordan Augustine leads a strong offense for the Crusaders, which is balanced between the run and the pass. Althoff plays a 5A schedule, and they passed every test.
Taylorville (9-0) -- After picking up the most wins in program history (10) last year, the Tornadoes could outdo themselves. Defense is the backbone of this team, but the offense has been consistently good as well (32 points per game).
Area teams
Mount Zion (6-3) -- Brandon Price had three good games at QB before he and the rest of the Braves ran into a tough Bethalto Civic Memorial team. The defense has been better stopping the run this year, but strong passing teams have been a problem.
Olney (6-3) -- The Tigers have split time at QB this year, although Derek Deimel took over in Week 9. Deimel is a double threat with his legs as well that's helped open up lanes for Josh Domingue. They open with Herrin (8-1), which didn't have the strongest schedule (34 playoff points).
Clinton (5-4) --Â Few teams are coming off such a compelling Week 9, between a comeback and making the playoffs for the first time since '04. The Maroons will hope to control clock with their running game led by Alec Cooley.
Most playoff appearances
Geneseo (74-34 in the playoffs) is making is 39th appearance, 10 more than any other team in the class
Least playoff appearances
West Chicago Wheaton Academy is making its second playoff appearance
Did you know?
Rochester's last playoff loss was a 41-40 defeat by Metamora in the 2009 semifinals. Metamora won the state championship by 34 points.
Defending champ
Rochester 49, Chicago Phillips 28
Leading contenders
Washington (9-0) – With SHG up in Class 6A, this could be the year. After a couple scares to open the season, Washington has been dominant en route to another unbeaten season. That stretch included four straight wins against playoff teams and the bracket could allow the Panthers to get on a roll.
Joliet Catholic (8-1) – Joliet has had a hiccup this season, two weeks ago in a 24-21 loss to 7A qualifier Lisle Benet. And the Hilltoppers' portion of the bracket is loaded with potential rematches against Woodstock Marian and Nazareth Academy up next. But they are again loaded with the offensive firepower needed to overtake anyone.
Don't rule out
Woodstock Marian (7-2) – Marian had a couple bad losses in the middle part of the season to Joliet Catholic and 8-1 Niles Notre Dame, but QB J.R. Budmayr wants to lead his team deep into the playoffs just as his two brothers have.
Nazareth Academy LaGrange Park (7-2) – Yet another team from the East Chicago Suburban Catholic Conference has a shot at making some postseason noise if it can find the defense that was strong through the first six weeks of the season. Watch out for senior cornerback Julian Love (Notre Dame commit) and defensive end Matt Prendergast (Lehigh).
Burbank St. Laurence (7-2) -- The Vikings are the highest scoring team in the field, averaging 49.8 points. They put up 70 in a win against 8-1 Kankakee McNamara. Their only losses were to 7A Lisle Benet and 8A Chicago Brother Rice.
Area teams
Eisenhower (6-3) – The Panthers could win a couple games but will have to play like it did through the first seven weeks. In Weeks 3 through 7, Eisenhower won by an average of 32 points as the defense was at its best. Special teams can break out a score at any time, as can a passing game that's the best the Panthers have ever had.
Mattoon (5-4) – Mattoon eeked into the playoffs by winning five of its last six games as running back Garett Rice and quarterback Braden Smith took turns having standout games. And the Wave learned to win the close ones. Four of their wins came by a touchdown or less.
Most playoff appearances
Joliet Catholic has been to the playoff 39 times.
Least playoff appearances
Chicago Solorio Academy is making its second straight trip in just its fourth year of existence.
Did you know?
Chicago Lindblom was 2-7 a year ago and had not made the playoff since 1990.
Defending champ
Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 29, Lombard Montini 14
