NORMAL -- Arcola's Clayton Miller was teetering on a bad round after double bogeys on two of his first three holes on the back nine during Friday's first round of the Class 1A golf tournament.

But Miller finished strong with birdies on three of his last four holes. He finished with an 81 and is tied for 16th heading into today's final round.

Miller is six strokes back of leaders Varun Chopra (Urbana Uni High), Connor Hurd (Byron) and Michael Mattas (Elgin St. Edward).

Also tied for 16th is Robinson's Tom Goodman, who is shooting for his third straight top-20 finish at state. Goodman was steady -- no birdies with just one double bogey.

Three strokes back of Miller and Goodman is Teutopolis' Christian Deters with an 84, which has him tied for 28th.

In Class 2A, Mount Zion's Ben Cleveland shot an 83 and is tied for 45th. Charleston freshman Ben Lanman shot a 93 and is tied for 101st.

Golfers at both Prairie Vista Golf Course (Class 1A) and Weibring Golf Club (Class 2A) will have later than expected tee times today -- 9:30 a.m. -- because of frost in the weather forecast.
