MAROA — Maroa-Forsyth quarterback Ian Benner is transferring to Chatham Glenwood for his senior season, he announced on Friday.
He's been a two-year starter at quarterback for the Trojans, leading the team to back-to-back state championship game appearances in Class 2A. He started at cornerback as a freshman, where the Trojans also went to the state title game.
Benner was also the Macon County Baseball Player of the Year after hitting .500 for the Trojans with a 0.84 ERA.
"After a lot of thought and talking with my friends and family, me and my family have decided that it is best to transfer to Chatham-Glenwood to do my senior year," Benner wrote in a tweet.
"This was a hard decision and I would like to say thank you to Coach Jostes and the football staff and Coach Martin and the baseball staff. I also want to say thank you for everyone who made it possible for me to accomplish what I have accomplished.
"The past 3 years were a blessing and the relationships I have made at Maroa-Forsyth will last a lifetime. With that being said this is a great opportunity for me and I can't wait to get started at Chatham-Glenwood."
It's unclear if Benner will play both sports at Chatham, or primarily focus on baseball.
Benner has been on the Herald & Review first-team all-Macon County team in each of the last two football seasons. He threw for 2,087 yards and 24 touchdowns on 157-of-232 passing, and rushed for 921 yards and nine TDs as a junior.
