CHAMPAIGN — The already deep defensive line for the Illinois football team just got deeper.

Oluwole Betiku Jr., a graduate transfer defensive end from USC, announced he was joining the Illini on Thursday afternoon via Twitter.

"Words can’t describe how excited I am to be a part the Fighting Illini football team. I can’t wait to get to work," the tweet read.

He has two years of eligibility remaining and is immediately eligible to play this season.

Betiku Jr. played in 14 games at USC with two tackles and redshirted last year after recovering from offseason hip surgery. He was a former 5-star recruit out of Junipero Serra High School in California.

The Illini have standout junior Bobby Roundtree at one defensive end spot and are looking to fill the other side. Owen Carney Jr., Isaiah Gay, Ayo Shogbonyo and Lere Oladipo have each taken reps at the position between last season and spring ball.

Neither Gay nor Carney have participated this spring while recovering from injuries.

Betiku Jr. is a physical presence at 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds.
