CHAMPAIGN — Illinois climbed within single digits late in the game before the Wolverines held off the Illini with a 79-69 win.
The loss was the fifth straight for Illinois, which is still winless in the Big Ten. Michigan, on the other hand, remained undefeated, moving to 16-0.
Ayo Dosunmu led Illinois with 23 points and Giorgi Bezhanishvili had 15 points.
Michigan breaking away
After allowing the lead to get to just seven points late in the second half, Michigan stopped an Illinois run quickly. Zavier Simpson hit a 3-pointer and Isaiah Livers followed with a thunderous one-handed dunk in transition.
The Wolverines lead 68-56 with 2:55 left in the game.
Illinois and Michigan trade runs
After trailing by 10 points, Illinois went on a 5-0 run to get back within five, 49-44, before the Wolverines answered back.
Michigan put together a 6-0 run of its own to take an 11-point lead before Adonis De La Rosa hit a hook shot in the paint.
Michigan leads 55-46 with 11:01 left in the game.
Frazier heating up on offense, Ayo with another block
Trent Frazier said on Wednesday he just needed one shot to fall, and he got it with a step-back 3-pointer to score the first Illinois points of the second half. He followed :with a layup, but No. 2 Michigan leads 46-39 with 15:26 left in the game.
Dosunmu, meanwhile, has another chase-down block on Michigan's Zavier Simpson. Dosunmu has 19 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
Ayo controls first half
Illinois freshman Ayo Dosunmu has the Illini on his shoulders. He had 19 points after he banked in a 3-pointer late in the first half. Michigan leads 39-35 at halftime.
Kipper Nichols had seven points. Giorgi Bezhanishvili has six points. Michigan has out-rebounded Illinois 21-11.
Jordan Poole leads Michigan with eight points. Ignas Brazdeikis, Jon Teske and Isaiah Livers each have seven points.
Underwood gets a tech
Illinois head coach Brad Underwood picked up his first technical foul of the season after he ripped off his sports jacket and threw it behind him. He feels the refs have missed traveling calls in this game.
Michigan leads 36-25 with 3:42 left in the first half, and hold an 18-7 rebounding edge on the Illini. Ayo Dosunmu has 10 points for Illinois.
Defense sparking Illinois
Michigan turns the ball over on an average of 9.2 times per game, and Illinois has already forced seven turnovers. The Wolverines lead 24-19 with 7:45 left in the first half. Ayo Dosunmu has six points, which includes a transition layup and a reverse layup. Defensively, he's been a factor, and has blocked Zavier Simpson in transition.
Kipper Nichols leads all Illini scorers with eight points and Dosunmu and Giorgi Bezhanishvili each have six.
Isaiah Livers has seven points to lead Michigan and Ignas Brazdeikis has six.
Illinois finding offense
After starting 2-of-7 from the field, Illinois has made four of the last six, but Michigan still leads 20-13 with 11:38 left in the first half.
Giorgi Bezhanishvili has displayed his hook shot, and has six quick points in the post. Illinois coach Brad Underwood has said it's been a point of emphasis to get him the ball in the post.
Michigan starts strong
The Wolverines have an 11-4 lead on Illinois with 15:59 left in the first half. Big man Jon Teske has two blocks early; one on Ayo Dosunmu and one on Giorgi Bezhanishvili.
Illinois is 2-of-7 from the field. Dosunmu and Kipper Nichols each have a layup.
