CHAMPAIGN — There was very little recruiting buzz about Giorgi Bezhanishvili a year ago and he turned in a stellar freshman season for the Illinois basketball team.
Similarly, there doesn't appear to be much about 6-foot-10, 220-pound big man Bernard Kouma, who gave a verbal commitment to the Illini via Twitter on Monday.
Kouma is from Our Savior Lutheran School in The Bronx, New York. He is originally from the country of Chad and came to the United States in 2016. He's unranked according to 247Sports and Rivals, the country's two premiere recruiting services.
Kouma chose Illinois over offers from Hofstra, Valpariso and Dayton. He averaged 14.3 points, 11 rebounds and 1.5 blocks as a senior.
The Illini struggled with frontcourt depth last season and all three players who have committed for the 2019 class are post players.
