ROCK ISLAND — The Millikin men's basketball team lost at No. 2-ranked Augustana College 66-49 Saturday in Rock Island.
Millikin stayed close to the Vikings in the first half and trailed 28-27 at half. The Big Blue took the lead early in the second half on a basket by Juwan Stewart with 19:09 left in the game, putting Millikin up 31-30. Augustana then went on an 11-0 run to pull ahead 41-31 with 15 minutes remaining. The Vikings run was spurred by three Big Blue turnovers.
"I feel like we played an outstanding first half against one of the best Division III teams in the country," Millikin men's coach Mark Scherer said. "Going into halftime down one, I felt good about the progress."
Millikin shot 39 percent from the field, going 3-of-13 (23 percent) from 3-point range. Augustana hit 47 percent of its shots, including going 9-of-18 (50 percent) from 3-point range. Millikin won the rebounding battle 36-26, but was hurt by 23 turnovers compared to only 14 for the Vikings.
"They ratcheted up the intensity in the second half," Scherer said. "Their physicality got to us too much and we turned the ball over too many times which cost us the game."
Elijah Henry led Millikin (8-6, 1-4 CCIW) with 16 points and six rebounds. Zach Fisher added 11.
"Great effort from Zach Fisher who faced a withering defense but still managed to score 11 points," Scherer said.
Dylan Sortillo led Augustana (11-2, 3-1 CCIW) with 19 points followed by Nolan Ebel with 13.
