Family: My parents are Rick and Juanita Spangler and I have seven siblings -- Javy, Keirstyn, Karrissa, Kyriah, Konnaleigh, KJ, and Karson.
Current position/responsibilities: Sports director at the Greater Decatur Family YMCA.
What do you like best about what you do? Helping our community engage in sports year-round is not just my job, it is my passion.
What do you like best about working or living in the community? Decatur has incredible families. Families in our community are dedicated to YMCA sports and seeing young athletes grow and succeed. They are more than “participants,” they are our team! They are invested, passionate and excited to help YMCA sports make a lasting difference in the community.
What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area? We just have to get the word out. Opportunities like coaching Y soccer or basketball, playing in our volleyball nights, or taking part in our adult kickball tournament are perfect for young adults. They just do not know all that is available to them sometimes. Decatur is a great place for young adults and I would love to see more of us getting involved, volunteering and becoming invested.
Who is the person who has had the biggest influence on you and why? My mom is the best! She has demonstrated what it looks like to balance everything she cares about. She makes every person she comes in contact feel important and has been there for me for so much. I am so blessed to have her.
My “I’d rather be …” bumper sticker would read: “I’d rather be on a beach.”
What is your favorite stress reliever? Running. I run almost every day. It’s what keeps me centered. I have a current goal to run 1,000 miles within the next year that I am working hard to hit.
What is your favorite movie? “Inception”
What is your favorite phone app? Apple Music. Always making new playlists and making everyone listen.
Quote to live by: “Do all things in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14
If you were a fictional character, which one would you be? Why? Leslie Knope from “Parks & Rec.” She is crazy passionate about her job and cares a ton about what she does for the community. She’s a super goofy and so am I. She writes overly thorough reports, as do I. My emails are usually far too in-depth. Her job is super busy and every day is different which is exactly my life right now!
