Last month, the Student Government Association (SGA), part of Student Life at Parkland College, attended this year's American Student Government Association (ASGA) training conference at North Park University in Chicago.
On October 24, Advisor Alex Warrick joined seven SGA students for the conference, including President Monica Rivas-Parker, Vice President Noah Hamilton, Secretary Lincoln Dulin, Student Trustee Perla Juarez-Cuevas, Senator Monte Edwards, Senator Aryan Yudono, and Senator Malachi Burns. Three of these students were recently elected to the SGA.
Following opening remarks from North Park University’s SGA president Jenna Jawhar, Parkland students networked with other SGA advisors and members through roundtable discussions and other similar activities. One included a physical business card exchange to encourage face-to-face interaction.
"I enjoyed learning from my peers during the roundtables," Rivas-Parker said. "I found it meaningful to connect with SGA officers from other institutions."
Throughout the conference, Parkland’s SGA representatives also attended a variety of sessions on student feedback collection, team communication, financial and time management, and promotional techniques.
"It was rewarding to see the students learn from qualified speakers from higher education institutions and the ASGA," Warrick said. "It reinforced many of the topics we have discussed this semester so far. I look forward to attending future conferences like this with the SGA team."
Founded in 2001, ASGA is a professional association for the students and advisors of student governments nationwide to share resources, seek consulting, and connect professionally. Parkland College became a member institution in 2025.
