The Office of the President distributed the following message to the campus community on November 2, 2026.
Dear campus community,
I am writing to you today regarding the events that occurred in Bloomington during the early morning hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026. Our hearts are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the college student who lost her life, and our care and concern is with all victims. Among the victims are two Illinois State students, as shared by the Bloomington Police Department.
I want to be clear: violence has no place in our community. Violence threatens not only individual safety, but also the sense of trust, belonging, and connection that binds us together.
I recognize that acts of violence, combined with unverified reports and rumors circulating across campus and social media, have left members of our community anxious and unsettled. We hear those concerns. Illinois State University is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment, while sharing timely and appropriate information to help our community remain informed and aware.
To that end, I encourage the campus community to download the Safe Redbirds app, which provides emergency message notifications, in-person and virtual safe walks, as well as other safety-related measures and support resources.
I recognize that members of our community may experience distress as a result of this incident. Students seeking support should reach out at any time to Student Counseling Services at (309) 438-3655 or by visiting their website. Faculty and staff in need of support are encouraged to seek services provided by the Employee Assistance Program offered by Human Resources.
As a reminder, this incident remains under investigation by the Bloomington Police Department. Anyone with first-hand information is encouraged to contact Detective Pedro Diaz at (309) 434-2532 or pdiaz@cityblm.org. We are strongest when we stand together in support of one another and in our shared commitment to a safe and caring community.
Sincerely,
President Aondover Tarhule
