Unit 5 was once again named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. This is an honor the district has received for the past several years, which Normal West High School Director of Bands and Building Music Department Chair Ryan Budzinski credits to the instructors and students.
"Unit 5 remains one of the best places for students to receive a music education each year because of the outstanding student musicians, music educators, and all those who support them," he said. "The music programs are rich in collaboration, innovation, artistry, and excellence -- beginning with kindergarteners and developing beyond high school graduation."
Junior high students receive a robust introduction to instruments through the Instrumental Exploration program and can start playing in band and orchestra as early as fifth grade. Students at the high school level travel across the state, the country, and even the world to play on some of the most renowned stages, including Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in London.
Music educators in the district serve in leadership roles for the Illinois Music Education Association, American String Teachers Association, the Illinois High School Association, and more. They are regularly presenters at the state music education conference and lead professional development for educators across Illinois.
"Being one of the Best Communities for Music Education is a testament to the comprehensive musical opportunities for all ages, in a variety of musical approaches--listening, experiencing, singing, playing, composing, and performing," Budzinski said. "Our students demonstrate creativity and excellence, and they are supported by a community that values arts education."
