As work continues on the new strip mall at the corner of William
and 22nd streets on the city’s east side, Time Machine takes a trip
back to 1956 to view the construction of The Pines Shopping Center.
Charles Daniels bought the land in 1954 from the Catholic Bishop of
Springfield with plans to build a new location for his Tolly’s
Market, several smaller shops and a 300 car parking lot.
Correction: The caption with the photo in last month’s Time
Machine of President Harry S. Truman with members of the Junior
Police included the wrong date. The Decatur visit took place in
October 1948.
