2003: Wetherholt poses with his partially finished 'Christ in Nails,' a sculpture being created entirely of nails donated by Christians around the world.
DECATUR - Artwork by Larry Wetherholt is on display through the
end of February at Rock Springs Nature Center.
Kathy Merner, director of the Macon County Conservation
District, said they had received calls from people anticipating the
late Decatur artist's work to be put on display at Rock Springs, so
they decided to do just that.
"Larry was well-known locally," Merner said. She added that
Wetherholt once painted a mural for Rock Springs. "It was only
natural that we exhibit his art here."
Artwork featured in the Rock Springs gallery includes prints,
paintings, sculpture and more.
"He didn't just paint. He created works of art in other media
forms," Merner said. "With this exhibit, people can see the talent
of Larry Wetherholt."
Wetherholt was a friend of conservation, said Jeff Tish, program
services manager of the conservation district.
Tish recalls often seeing the artist at Rock Springs Nature
Center, using nature as his muse in creating his works.
"We try to support various things related to nature and
history," Tish said. "Larry's artwork depicts both, with a
wonderful variety of beautiful artwork that complements the history
of Central Illinois."
More than 45 pieces were loaned by their owners for the Rock
Springs exhibit.
"There's a nice range of the many, many art pieces Larry did
over the years," Tish said.
Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
